When: Monday, November, 5th, 11:00 a.m.

Where: In front of the Massachusetts State House

Boston, MA- As part of the Just Communities/MA Trust Act campaign, immigrant families affected by S-Comm will gather the day before elections to remind elected officials of the need for a JUST immigration system. "We recognize that the Secure Communities Program is only one component of a larger problem with the U.S. Government's current "Enforcement Only" response to immigration in this country. During this election season there is much talk about democracy and freedom from our policy makers, but little discussion of how out of step our immigration system is with those values," said Patricia Montes, Executive Director of Centro Presente.

Reminder! JwJ Steering Committee Meeting Thursday, October 18th

JOBS WITH JUSTICE QUARTERLY STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING
Thursday, October 18th at 6pm
UNITE HERE Local 26

33 Harrison Ave, Boston MA
Orange Line/Chinatown

Dear Sisters & Brothers,

This is just a quick update on our campaign work and a reminder about our upcoming steering committee meeting on Thursday, October 18th at 6PM at UNITE HERE Local 26 (33 Harrison Ave. Boston, MA). We had to reschedule the last meeting due to a conflict with the debates and other coalition partner meetings.  We will hear reports from our campaigns,  stake out our priorities for the next three months, and discuss organizational planning.

Here is a quick update on what’s been going on:

Faith and Justice Trivia! Does your team have a prayer? Come out and help Interfaith Worker Justice keep the faith alive at trivia night on Wednesday, October 17th at 6PM at Doyle’s in Jamaica Plain.  Click here for more details!

JwJ 20th Birthday! Thanks to Gillian’s hard work, we had  over 100 people party down hard at our birthday bash!  Totally fun and we can’t wait for the next one!

Verizon! Verizon workers are in the process of voting on their new contract.  Whatever the outcome, they would not have gotten this far without all of your solidarity! Great work from our coalition members who made a difference; we can’t thank you all enough for all you did for these folks.

Stand up to Walmart!
We had a very successful day of at at Walmarts across the state on October 10th.  Email Edwin at edwin@massjwj.net for more info on how you can get involved.

Campaign to Protect Public Education!  Jasiela, Lily and Ada have been busy building a network of support for teachers in communities across the Commonwealth.  They will be calling you to ask to speak about the campaign at your meetings and with your membership as we fight to protect public education, which faces many corporate-bankrolled challenges.

We look forward to seeing you on October 18th!  If you would like to include something on the agenda, please contact
Russ at russdavis@comcast.net.

Thanks again for your hard work on behalf of workers’ rights!

In solidarity,

Edwin Argueta,  Jasiela Chaves,  Russ Davis,  Jennifer Doe, Paul Drake, Ada Fuentes,  Mary Hewey,  Lily Huang, Gillian Mason, James Razsa

and an hourly service worker.  The rich guy brings great alcohol that he

The hourly service worker brings all the snacks -- and the rich guy eats them

Hi,

Windows 7 and Firefox here. Both links opened fast.

Greenish architect-type background, links at top (with graphics), photo in the middle that changes. Typo -- exhebition -- as exhibition -- in links. But the links are fine.

It’s time to take action at the Le Meridien!

The Le Meridien Cambridge is trying to decrease our hotel standards. Starwood owns the Le Meridien brand, but the hotel is owned and operated by an out-of-state company called HEI Hospitality. Over 70% of workers at the Le Meridien Cambridge have asked for a fair process to decide on whether to have a union on the job. I'm using Chrome 22.0.1229.92 on OSX Lion. It loaded fairly slowly, but I
see a logo line with buttons along the top. I also see a typo in one of
the top buttons, but that's probably not what you're asking for.
That's followed by a set of four pictures in a column, all jammed together.

When I use Safari instead of Chrome, the four pictures are down to one
picture which rotates between the four.

Clearly, the Safari version is broken, since it's using that ugly rotating
image. If he could get that to stop, then it'd be fine.

To me, both links show the same thing:  grey background with "blueprint"-style sketchings on it; a top banner of links to other parts of the site, and a central rotating photo display.  I am using Opera.

Heck, I dunno if there was ever a law anywhere about who takes whose's name.
Social convention can be stronger than law, and some things Just Aren't Done.
And again, I dunno what the social conventions were in that corner of England
at that time. My ignorance in these matters is shining bright for all to see.

the house was gifted (technical term) to the bride in the matrimonial
settlement?
(more common than you'd guess - at least in Scottish historical deeds)

BTW, yes a man could take his wife's name even in the 1950s, just as he
could in the 1750s or the 1350s. There is no law that says a woman
*has* to take her husband's name, it's just convention - and indeed
until recently (mid 20th C) she was only known by his name in connection
with him. So if Jenny Brown married John Smith she would be Mrs John
Smith, but still known as Jenny Brown when you're referring to *her*,
not her as his wife.

I remember being confused by that. Then, I remember there being some
explanation that explained it. I distinctly recall that my next
memory was that I was no longer confused. I suspect the explanation
wasn't memorable, since I don't remember what it was.

Sweetness at the Bottom of the Hangman's Mustard

I just finished the third Flavia de Luce book -- "A Red Herring Without
Mustard". I've got a question I'm hoping someone here can clear up for me.

This book, as well as the first two FdL books, talk about Buckshaw having
been in the de Luce family for centuries. All sorts of dead de Luces are
named as having done this or that with the estate.

Flavia's father is Col. de Luce.

There's also some discussion about the property being owned by Harriet,
Flavia's mother. I think there's some discussion about her having grown up
at Buckshaw.

How is the property owned by Harriet if Flavia's father is the de Luce with
the aforementioned decedents?

Possibilities I've thought of:

- Flavia's parents are siblings/cousins and this is a case of
inbreeding amongst the aristocracy.

- Flavia's father took his wife's name when they married in order
to keep alive the "important" lineage.
(Was this a possibility in 1950's England? I have no idea when it
became possible in the US, much less anywhere else in the world.)

- The author is confused.

- I am confused. (Actually, this is a certainty and not a possibility.)

I don't remember this being explained in the first two books, and I'm pretty
certain it wasn't in the third.

Thanks,
Wayne

FW: Join in our Community + Labor + Youth delegation on Wal-mart National Day of Action (Wed, October 10th)

Please email me if you are interested in joining one of these delegations!  We are trying to cover 48 stores in Massachusetts on October 10th.

Edwin

www.changewalmartma.org

October 10th - Walmart National Day of Action

On Wednesday October 10th, all over America, workers and community supporters are standing up to Walmart.  Walmart warehouse workers, unrepresented by a union, already led the charge and went on strike in California and Illinois. This past weekend the workers concluded their 15-day strike and 50-mile march through Southern California and went back to work when they won safety improvements from the job from.

Our Coalition, Massachusetts Stands Up to Walmart, plans on having delegations to all 48 Walmart stores in Massachusetts.  We will be demanding, with folks from all over America, that Walmart does not infringe on their workers right to organize, they deserve a living wage, benefits and a safe workplace both in the stores and throughout the Walmart supply chain.  If we can change the work conditions of the 1.4 million Americans who work for Walmart, we will begin to shift the very foundation of our unjust economy.

We are planning two levels of delegations to Massachusetts stores,

(1)     Level one is a smaller delegation consisting of at least two people.  These smaller delegations will deliver a letter of demands, as mentioned above, to the store manager.  Two people are the minimum but if you can make it bigger, its better.  We will provide you with the letter and you and your delegation (your co-worker, neighbor, fellow unionist, mom…) can work out the most convenient time on October 10th to deliver the letter.  These delegations are super important because we want corporate to know there is nowhere in Massachusetts they can hide.

(2)    Level two is larger delegations consisting of at least three organizations and with the desire that we represent the community at large as much as possible.  We have  identified six regional stores that we feel we can make larger delegations and we hope to concentrate media attention on these.    These larger delegations will meet at a time that works for everyone and will enter the store, demand to see the manager, deliver the letter and engage the manager in conversation about how the community supports the workers

This is a big undertaking and we need everyone’s help to make it happen.  Edwin and I will be calling you directly to ask you to participate in one of these delegations and work out the details.  This is an audacious, state wide day of action, so thank you in advance for your help.
