October 10th - Walmart National Day of Action

On Wednesday October 10th, all over America, workers and community supporters are standing up to Walmart.  Walmart warehouse workers, unrepresented by a union, already led the charge and went on strike in California and Illinois. This past weekend the workers concluded their 15-day strike and 50-mile march through Southern California and went back to work when they won safety improvements from the job from.

Our Coalition, Massachusetts Stands Up to Walmart, plans on having delegations to all 48 Walmart stores in Massachusetts.  We will be demanding, with folks from all over America, that Walmart does not infringe on their workers right to organize, they deserve a living wage, benefits and a safe workplace both in the stores and throughout the Walmart supply chain.  If we can change the work conditions of the 1.4 million Americans who work for Walmart, we will begin to shift the very foundation of our unjust economy.

We are planning two levels of delegations to Massachusetts stores,

(1)     Level one is a smaller delegation consisting of at least two people.  These smaller delegations will deliver a letter of demands, as mentioned above, to the store manager.  Two people are the minimum but if you can make it bigger, its better.  We will provide you with the letter and you and your delegation (your co-worker, neighbor, fellow unionist, mom…) can work out the most convenient time on October 10th to deliver the letter.  These delegations are super important because we want corporate to know there is nowhere in Massachusetts they can hide.

(2)    Level two is larger delegations consisting of at least three organizations and with the desire that we represent the community at large as much as possible.  We have  identified six regional stores that we feel we can make larger delegations and we hope to concentrate media attention on these.    These larger delegations will meet at a time that works for everyone and will enter the store, demand to see the manager, deliver the letter and engage the manager in conversation about how the community supports the workers

This is a big undertaking and we need everyone’s help to make it happen.  Edwin and I will be calling you directly to ask you to participate in one of these delegations and work out the details.  This is an audacious, state wide day of action, so thank you in advance for your help.
