That sounds vaguely familiar, but I'm not sure if I've seen it. I'll
keep an eye out for it.

I was able to watch "9" last night, and it was excellent! Thanks for
all who recommended it, I'm really glad y'all spoke up. Very cool movie.

For years and years, I was in a medieval recreation group. I keep
seeing people in Vikings that lok like people from the group. This
Athelstan is very different from the Athelstan I knew for so long.

You're right about Lagertha, she's pretty cool. And very scary.

I had a dream about vikings last night. Jo and I were vikings and we
were involved in a raid on a village. We captured some circus ponies.

I didn't say we were effective vikings.

Thanks for the pointer. I'll wait until I finish season 1 before
delving in.

Re: a sentient... rag doll?

I loved UP!....the first....I'm gonna guess about fifteen minutes...of the movie has no words, and it tells a story that is so deeply emotionally connecting...But I understand the frustration with the art style.

Have you seen the animated short about the paper airplanes?  You might like that.  Also, have you seen the Disney/Salvador Dali animation?  You might like that as well.  It's very abstract, of course...but it's very beautiful.

It's the pseudo-3D-like-ish animation I hate.  "Brave" was very good, except
for the 3Dishness of it.  (Also I hate that all the people had pumpkins
instead of heads.)  Same thing for "How to Train Your Dragon" -- good story,
excellent backgrounds, fake-3D is stinkers.

I wanted to see "Up", I wanted to see "Monster House", I wanted to see a
pile of other animated movies, but the animation style was really painful.

Ah, but Bugs Bunny, "Treasure Planet", "Hercules", "Little Mermaid",
"Hunchback"...  Now *that's* great animation!

After only a short bit of the film, it looks like "9" also has excellent
animation.

Yup, that's true.  In my encroaching old age, I'll retreat into crotchety-

everyone else is wrong and it stinks that I lost the animation wars.

Vikings is awesome! There are, of course, issues with the historic
timeline, but ignore that and you'll be fine. Lagertha is the best. So
it Athelstan.

Crap, I had a dream about Vikings last night--the show, not Vikings in
general. You just reminded me. But I know this is because I fell asleep
to the show Barbarians and it was in fact the Vikings episode.

I discovered AFTER the end of season 2 that one of my authors has been
doing recaps on her blog (because the editor never told me!). I haven't
read the recaps (except a few of her comments on the season 2
finale--she had the same reaction to a throwaway line that I
did--timeline issue). It's www.patriciabracewell.com

Oog. Now there was an awful movie. Almost worth watching because of
how bad it was.

This movie taught me that when an alien invasion force arrives and
it's invincible to bullets that I should instead use a katana. I
also learned that aliens use futhark runes for their alphabet.

This movie, starring Dylan Vox (who I hadn't heard of either), isn't
to be confused with "Battle Los Angeles". IMDB gives BoLA 1.9 stars,
which is generous and it gives BLA 5.8 stars.

On the positive side of viewing, I just finished season 1 of "Homeland"
and just started season 1 of "Vikings".

Re: a sentient... rag doll?

I own it I think.  It was a great movie.  First off, it's a computer animated movie, so a sentient rag doll isn't so strange.  But the entire movie is sentient things...IIRC, I don't think there's real people in it at all...so it's kind of alternate universe-ey.

You'll know if you want to watch it by the opening scenes.  I thought it was pretty amazing, actually.  I liked it a lot.  It's got some spiritual overtones, and it's...welll......it's just neat.

So I third that recommendation.

Not enough umlauts or diereses.

I think the burlap is the saving grace.  Burlap is a good, honest fabric;
how could a rag doll turn bad if it's made of burlap?

Without giving away too much, I'll just say thinking of them as rag dolls is a step in the wrong direction.

Cool, thanks! I didn't know about isfdb.org, but it's great useful resource.

It looks like Hood's work is scattered around a bunch of magazines, but not
collected anywhere. I guess that explains why I couldn't find anything by
her. Ah well, I've got "Food Chain Fandango" with the Dark Chocolate
Macadamia Nut Mousse Cake, and I'll be happy with it.

Thanks!
Wayne

Cool, thanks! I didn't know about isfdb.org, but it's great useful resource.

Subject: looking for a hood

Martha A. Hood, to be specific.

Years and year ago, I read an excellent short story by Martha A. Hood.
It was called "Food Chain Fandango". That's the only thing I've seen
that she's written. Does anyone know if she's written anything else
or if she's still writing?

Thanks,
Wayne
