I just didn't know who to vent to. I mean...I'm venting via the internet. The irony is not lost on me.

Even before the internet it was said that the only thing that exceeded the speed of light was rumor. The net makes it faster, and global. And of course there's the old party game "Telephone" in which people sit in a large circle, and the first person whispers something to the person next to him, then that person repeats it to the next, and so on all around the circle. The last person before the originator repeats loudly the item that he heard, and much merriment ensues, even before the first person repeats loudly the item which he/she originally said. The distortions get extreme, one or two words at a time.On 8/6/14 1:01 PM, Kathy Recckia wrote:
Omg...stupidness. Rant to follow immediately after this sentence.
I work for a synagogue. We started getting calls yesterday that someone
of Arab descent was caught on our parking lot cameras photographing the
synagogue at various angles and speeding away.
So here's the thing...we don't HAVE parking lot cameras. We knew it was
nonsense the moment we heard it.
So then we tried to damp that down a little bit, but it had hit
facebook, and people were saying that someone was almost kidnapped.
Then I get a phone call from one of our congregants saying that they
heard that my boss was in touch with Homeland Security about this.
(Srsly? And how do you think that information would come to you if
that were the case?) I explained that he was in touch with Homeland
Security several months ago regarding a grant to increase our security,
but that any conversations with them were strictly financial in nature
and had nothing to do with this debacle as it was unfolding.
The local police force contacted our synagogue asking if they could view
our tapes. WE DON'T HAVE TAPES. They eventually tell us that there WAS
a woman, who WAS being followed, who pulled over and took pictures of
the people following her, who also took pictures of her. That was
everything that happened, and it was nowhere near our synagogue.
We released a statement with the police report information on that.
This has NOT died down. Today we're hearing that what actually
happened was that a woman was nearly kidnapped, but she managed to fight
her way out of the trunk of the car.
When one of our congregants tried to reply-all to an email with 18
people on it saying that those cameras didn't even exist she was told,
"NO. I KNOW THIS IS TRUE." Now I just found out that it has turned
into Arabs kidnapping children. *headdesk*
Our phones are going crazy because the internet won't shut up. I need
to bitchslap the internet so hard it bites its damn tongue.
Thank you for letting me rant. It'd be funny if I wasn't in the middle
of it right now.
