Even before the internet it was said that the only thing that exceeded
the speed of light was rumor. The net makes it faster, and global. And
of course there's the old party game "Telephone" in which people sit in
a large circle, and the first person whispers something to the person
next to him, then that person repeats it to the next, and so on all
around the circle. The last person before the originator repeats loudly
the item that he heard, and much merriment ensues, even before the first
person repeats loudly the item which he/she originally said. The
distortions get extreme, one or two words at a time.
