Re: The World

As everyone has said, it's still mostly ok around here, especially in the more liberal areas of the country.  I haven't travelled internationally in a long time so I can't say how it will be getting through the border but as older white people from a European country you shouldn't have too many problems.

And I would *love* to see you when you're in the area.  Let me know what day you'll be here and I'll make *sure* I'm not working :)

Re: The World

To be honest, I'm more worried about getting in and out of the US. Ian has his ESTA, but you can be turned away with one. He's concerned that something he said on social media would flag him up. I'll go through the long queues with him rather than taking the fast track for citizens, and I'll stay quiet unless necessary.

Remember that, in 2004, because he had an expired Iranian work visa in his passport, he was stopped three times leaving Newark Airport -- when we checked in, at X-ray, and at the gate. When I asked, as a US citizen, why my British husband (with then-blond hair and still blue eyes) was being interrogated again. The response: "How many times has your husband been to Iran, Ma'am?" The answer was once -- for work -- in a plant operated by the South Koreans with an international work force, as I recall. And I reminded the man that it wasn't illegal for UK citizens to travel to Iran.

I also remember checking on my mother in late October 2001 during half term and how surreal the US seemed then. I fear it's going to be even more surreal this time. :(

Re: The World

What is worrying is that the UK news media are saying nothing about what's happening in the US - they're more concerned with what's happening/not happening in the Ukraine and Gaza.

it comes to immigrant children. This kind of crap doesn't really
affect white, English-speaking visitors though.

At some point, things are going to start falling apart if the
federal funds that have been blocked don't go here they should
be going, but a couple months isn't enough for the highways to
fall apart or anything like that.

I do strongly recommend making sure your vaccinations are all
current and taking reasonable precautions since there are
outbreaks of diseases (measles, TB, and bird flu are the ones I
know about) that the federal government is trying to hide.

Re: The World

I don't know what the British media is saying, but if you're
asking about it I think it is safe to say they're exagerating.
You're not trans or brown-skinned so you're not going to be
targetted by individuals or government authorities. And you're
not pregnant so you probably won't die if you need medical care.

I live in a very red part of a very blue state. Nothing bad is
happening to anyone on a person-to-person level. People arem't
attacking each other or anything like that, at least not any
more than normal. It is all at the government level. The local
governments are rushing to do all the awful things they've been
wanting to do. Franklin County, on the other side of the river
from me, is trying to demand that the local health department
stop offering covid vaccines. One of the local school districts
wants to disobey state law, and the instructions send out by the
state education department, about not cooperating with ICE when
it comes to immigrant children. This kind of crap doesn't really
affect white, English-speaking visitors though.

At some point, things are going to start falling apart if the

Re: The World

I was just going to say something similar to what Jane said.

Right now, news from Boston is the Haitian community is worried about deportations - and you're neither Haitian nor a refugee living here without becoming a resident.

Also, Concord is not the kind of place where that kind of thing happens... well, outside of that one incident 250 years ago, at a bridge... which did involve Massholes shooting at British... *giggles*

Come to think of it, that was 250 years ago on April 19th...

So expect some ramped up touristy crowds, maybe?

I went to high school right by that area (Lexington, pretty much on Battle Road) and haven't visited since 2019, so... I have some ideas about restaurants, but some of the ones I know of *may* have disappeared since I visited them.

One place in the area that I always loved (the Mill at Wayside Inn, Sudbury) does have a restaurant. It's very likely to require reservations, especially given the 250 years thing (even though the Inn itself turns 259 years old this year) - growing up, it was considered super pricey, so I only went once when my dad's parents were up for a visit, but I'm pretty sure it was a bit more reasonable when I last ate there, in 2017 (± a year).

Since you're just getting there on Sunday, I can definitely take a day or two off to come down there, and could even play tour guide if you wanted.   I probably did 80% of my swimming when I was little in Walden Pond, so I'm pretty familiar with it (minus any changes made since the last visit, 2017ish).

And also, but not least important... I meant to say this in my first reply, got distracted, and then completely forgot:

My condolences on your loss!

Hugs,
        Mina Ellyse

Re: The World

I think Jane's right; I think the areas you're going to be in are probably going to be fine.

Even here, where it's extremely red, it seems okay right now, though I overheard an exchange between two people in the parking lot of the grocery store yesterday that I don't know how much was just someone being an asshole and how much was someone being an asshole because he felt entitled to be, if you know what I mean by the difference.  He had parked his big pickup in the spot next to her much smaller car in such a way that she couldn't back out of her parking spot.  He was crooked and sort of partially behind her, so he was definitely in the wrong, but when she asked him to move his response was "I can park any way I want to, bitch."  I didn't hear exactly what she said to him, so I don't know whether she was equally impolite or not.  I also didn't stick around to see how it played out, but when I came back out of the store, that pickup was straight in its spot and the other car was gone, so.... *shrug*

I also passed someone in the grocery store who was standing talking with some friends and I definitely heard, "Trump'll fix it."  I did my best to restrain my eye roll and snarl as I hurried by them.

We don't seem to be getting calls at work that are any more hateful than usual -- there are always people who are angry that they're not eligible for one program or another and insist that if they were...um...you know what?  There's no delicate way to put it and I'm sure you can guess the sorts of things they say.  My coworker was on the phone with someone a week or so ago who ranted at her for 25 minutes, and it was all that sort of sexist, racist crap, but because he never actually swore at her, she couldn't hang up.  Anyway.  Those calls don't seem to be increasing.  Not yet, anyway.

The World

Hi all,

I figure this is a safe place to ask questions.

Back in September, my brother, about to turn 76, started having serious complications regarding his Parkinson's. British Airways was having a big sale. I realised I'd not been to Pennsylvania since 2015, so I booked tickets for Ian and me to fly to Philadelphia in April when I have three weeks off.

Sadly, my brother's health went downhill a lot faster than any of us thought. I wound up flying to Philly in early December for his funeral.

At that time, my sister, who now lives in Central Pennsylvania (near her son), asked if we were still coming over in April. Well, yes, I replied. They were nonrefundable tickets. We're set up to spend some time in the Philly area, drive to my sister's for a day or two, drive north to the Boston, MA, area (Ian Walden finally gets to Walden Pond), then drive back to Philly and fly home.

But all the doomscrolling is not only making me angry, it's making us both worried about travelling to the US in April. Ian already has his ESTA, but we're both worried.

US friends, what's it all like there now? And anyone in the Boston area, want to have dinner one night? I can give you the dates we'll be around later -- we'll be staying in Concord, but we'll have a car.

Re: Hello travelers!

Thanks, Ellen!

The 10 weeks apply only to sabbatical years. The sabbatical is a month and you can't split the time up. Last time we did LA/Vegas (saw Elton John in Vegas--totally worth it!). We wanted to do Egypt this time around, but the airfare alone is hugely spendy.
