Btw, first to third years is equivalent to North American 6th-8th grades. Nowadays, first year (meaning first year of secondary school) here is called Year 7, second year is Year 8 and so on.
Year 1 is what would be Kindergarten in the US.
I teach sixth form, basically Years 12 and 13, or US juniors and seniors, grades 11 and 12. After Year 11 (now the end of GCSE -- General Certificate of Secondary Education), students may choose what they study, whether it's what A level subjects (English is no longer required, but a lot of students choose it as universities like it) or vocational courses. Until recently, post-GCSE education was not mandatory. We still teach GCSE at the college, but it's generally re-sits for students who didn't earn that magical 'C' grade in GCSE English Language at school. To study A levels or Btecs (vocational), they need to get that C, and the government made it a rule last year that all students who don't earn a C grade in GCSE English and Maths must continue to work on it until they do. At first, I thought that the re-sit students would be hard-working, as they have to re-do the class. Nope. They tend to be angry and resentful that they have to re-do it. It can
take a full term to convince some of them that we (their teachers) are on their side and that we really want them to succeed. That said, I didn't teach re-sits last year and I think that I have only A levels on my timetable for this upcoming academic year, though.
