HEY!!!! I resemble that remark!

I'm not actually from Kentucky, but I got here as soon as I could. ;)

The traveling friends from New Zealand likely were used to traveling (and having working privileges!) in Commonwealth countries, and thought of the US as just another colony, recently enough so as not to make a difference. Back when I did my Eurailpass tour, I met a number of people under this status, on very extended trips because they could legally work here and there to pay their way.
