Were I ever to attend one of the big Solstice celebrations, I'd go to the one at Avebury because I like Avebury more, plus it's far less crowded and the solstice is much less of a media circus there than at Stonehenge.

Then we went to Stonehenge and they did the usual walk around. After that, I suggested Avebury. Neither of them, both of whom are very well read and educated, had ever heard of Avebury, but they agreed to go.

Funny you should say that. I'm up the other end of the country and don't get down there all that often, but when I do I much prefer Avebury and West Kennet...there is a very interesting atmosphere there.
Up here we have a huge earthwork (no stones, but three circular earthworks linked by a procesional way) known as Thornborough Henge. It is quite possibly as significant as Stonehenge and some very interesting burials are around it. I live about 12 miles away. Until a couple of years ago I didn't even know it existed and we are currently trying to stop an open caste mining company from doing unspeakable things to the landscape immediately surrounding it. Its amazing how things in a certain part of the country get loads of press and media attention while those in other parts of the country don't. (I know Stone Henge looks more dramatic and iconic but it does seem to be true in general.)
