Occasionally, however, there will be good books for free -- sometimes the first book in a series will be free for a short while to try to lure in readers to buy the rest.

There are mailing lists that notify you about free or cheap e-books (yes, too often the first in series)

there's also the one mostly romances and I don't remember the address just now. :-( Anyway, I prefer first two - because I can decide which genres I want to see. The second one also has links to Smashwords.com - not only kindle format. The third is mostly about reduced prices, but usually in several formats.
Smaswords like Baen is without DRM and call me old-fashioned, but I prefer to know, that a book that I bought is mine to read and to back up, :-)
I should warn you, though, that several free books had given me a headache because of the grammar. :-(
In addition to a selection of the free books, Smashwords has a selection of books, for which you decide how much to pay (talking about crooked grammar. :-( )
And last, but not least - he has a familiar face: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/64742 :-) (I now own it in both paper and e-format - the one about the phone number is my favorite)
