I caved and upgraded from a 'dumbphone' to a smart one in late April. My almost six-year-old mobile wasn't working well and when I learned that I'd been due an upgrade for several years I gave in and got a Sony Xperia, which has a Kindle app. I'd thought that the screen would be too small, but it works. I also do have a Kindle and I feel guilt regarding Amazon. (Amazon.co.uk apparently hasn't been as nasty regarding Hatchette, but there's still guilt.)
For me, the Kindle is good for travelling, be it a long trip or even a short one -- when I take the train to work (only a 10-minute ride -- not much time for getting into grading essays), take the train to London (and don't want to cart about a heavy bag all day) etc. It's easy to throw the Kindle into my bag; it doesn't weigh much. Don't worry: I still read many, many 'real' books. I use the library and I purchase books at physical book stores. The Kindle is for books I want to read but won't want to keep forever.
