Which reminds me of a time at a Holiday Inn in Manhattan, Kansas, (home
of Kansas State University) when we walked up to the front desk, and the
person behind the desk was a Sikh, complete with blinding white turban,
short, neat black beard, and preternaturally clean look, and no doubt a
very sharp knife somewhere about his person. He was not wearing a name
tag. When we finished what we needed to do, I said "Thank you, Mr.
Singh." I didn't expect his complete astonishment: "How did you know my
name?!" I just shrugged. "Well, you just looked like a Mr. Singh."
Apparently he had the bone-deep assumption that all native Kansans were
as totally ignorant of everything as I am about things Twenty-first
Century British.
