Oh, it's very minimal. Let's see, what do the TV show and the books have in common?

The protagonist's name in both is Temperance Brennan and she's a forensic anthropologist.

That's it.

In the books, Tempe is older. She's divorced with a grown-up daughter and lives with a cat called Birdy. She splits her time between Montreal (she speaks fluent French and works at the Laboratoire des Sciences Judiciaires et de Médecine Légale) and North Carolina, where she teaches at the University of NC, Charlotte, and consults with the police on cases. (Birdy travels with her.) She has an off-on again relationship with a Montreal police officer and has to deal with issues from her ex (he's in NC), although their relationship tends to be amicable. The first book was set in Montreal, and they tend to switch back and forth a bit. I tend to prefer the Montreal books, but I don't mind the NC ones. Occasionally, she'll be 'on the road' and the book will be set elsewhere.  For example, one is set in Guatemala.

At the time the first one was published, Patricia Cornwell was a bestselling author. However, here came Kathy Reichs, who actually is a forensic anthropologist and a far better writer than Cornwell. To me, her books were a marvel at the time.
