Why indeed? That was the question we all asked that day.

Before I learned to drive, I gave pedestrian directions, often sending
people in the wrong direction down one way streets. I also didn't pay
attention when I was driven somewhere. In the Boston area, and lot of
roads don't have signs because you're supposed to know where you are.
