When the Boulder populace passed the smoking ban, there was an exemption for bars and taverns that could prove adequate ventilation between smoking and non-smoking areas. One bar that did that was the Yard of Ale, the local lgbt bar. They'd always had two rooms, with a doorway inbetween. They merely installed glass sliding doors (if I remember correctly) instead of an open doorway and were allowed to have smoking in the inner room. Employees could choose to work in the smoking or non-smoking area, so nobody was forced to work in the smoking area if they didn't want to do so; nobody lost a job over it.

The Yard went out of business in late 2006, years after the city's smoking ban. Some people claim it was because of a statewide smoking ban that year that prohibited smoking in bars, no matter what. However, some locals actually noted that the Yard's business had started to go downhill before that -- and long after the original ban. They thought it was more to do with the fact that Boulder is such an open and welcoming community that a separate gay bar just wasn't necessary any longer.

Maybe. It's kind of a nice thought in a way.

And on the costs of tobacco here, many people roll their own as it's cheaper.
