I concur. Considering the number of times I've travelled -- and travelled internationally, I've rarely had problems with luggage not reaching me. I think it's happened twice, once in 1993 when visiting friends in London, and again in 2004, after my nephew's wedding.

Both times were landing at Heathrow, but it wasn't that airport's fault. The day I flew to London from Denver in 1993 there was a major electrical outage at the Denver airport. I didn't know if I'd get to fly at all that day, to be honest. Suddenly, the United rep called me over and told me I could fly to Denver that night if I was willing to fly to Seattle. I'd have to fly to Seattle (go west to travel east, sure) and then pick up a non-stop to London. To compensate me for the trouble, they'd upgrade me to business class on the Seattle-London flight.

Yes, I agreed to that immediately. :) But because of the problems in Denver that day, my bag didn't get on the plane with me and wasn't there when I landed. However, it was delivered the very next day to my friends' house. And, as I was staying with friends, I was able to borrow clothing, a toothbrush etc.

The second time was flying home from my nephew's wedding. I flew home on 24 December, from Philly to Canada (same trip) and then to London. Christmas Eve is busy, so it's not surprising my bag missed a connection. Again, it was delivered the very next day -- on Christmas -- and I was at home.

So, no big deal. But extra underwear and a spare toothbrush in your hand baggage are a great plan, just in case. :)
