Don't worry, it's not that bad.
I've not flown in or out of Toronto since my nephew's wedding back in December 2004 (I think that's the year), but I recall it being a decent airport, easy to navigate etc. I flew to Philadelphia via Toronto simply because there was a great deal on Air Canada from Heathrow -- it was the cheapest fare and the flight was after work ended that Friday. (My nephew was married the Saturday before Christmas; Friday was my last teaching day that year.)
I didn't have a British passport yet (I was more than eligible for one, but I'd bothered to get it yet), so I went through Canadian customs using my US passport. When they asked if Toronto was my final destination, I explained that no, I was en route to Philadelphia to attend a wedding. Why did I choose to fly through Canada to attend a wedding in Philadelphia, they asked.
My answer: It was the cheapest fare available.
The passport official grinned, stamped my passport and passed me through. :)
Leaving was simple also.
I've never flown in or out of Rome, but local friends just returned from a trip there. They flew Heathrow to Rome. I could ask them about the Rome airport. :)
