M. Ward is sort of warm folky stuff. He was part of Monsters of Folk
(with Jim James from My Morning Jacket, and Conor Oberst and Mike
Mogis from Bright Eyes) a couple years ago, but I like his solo stuff
much better.
The Mekons formed in 1977 in Leeds and recorded a song called "Never
Been in a Riot," which was a very noisy rebuttal to the Clash's "White
Riot." Then they went off and learned how to play their instruments,
added fiddle to their line-up, and started coming out with something
gloriously bizarre, noisy, and catchy about every two years since
1985, which is a pretty impressive output. I'm not quite sure how to
describe their sound, since every album has a slightly different vibe
-- they tend to be rather jangly and discordant, but with strong
melodic lines throughout.
