That's about what I remembered.  While I did get the sense that Sam was
older, I never really got a feel for how old he was supposed to be.

Hm, that's not the impression I got about Merry.  Not that I'm saying
you're wrong, I certainly don't know one way or the other, but I always
thought Merry was a good bit older.

 

One could, of course, consult the family trees in Appendix C.  Frodo was born in Shire Year 1368.  Sam was born in 1380.  Merry was born in 1382 and Pippin was born in 1390.  As the story begins in 1418, Frodo was 50, the same age as Bilbo when he set out on his adventure.  Sam was 3, still young for a hobbit.  Merry 36, Pippin 28.
