One could, of course, consult the family trees in Appendix C. Frodo was
born in Shire Year 1368. Sam was born in 1380. Merry was born in 1382 and
Pippin was born in 1390. As the story begins in 1418, Frodo was 50, the
same age as Bilbo when he set out on his adventure. Sam was 3, still young
for a hobbit. Merry 36, Pippin 28.

I was charmed that the actor who played Frodo was the youngest (playing the oldest Hobbit); while the oldest actor played the youngest Hobbit (not counting Sam).
Merry and Pippin were bit more silly in the movies; but even in the books they weren't accounted as being especially deep thinking. The last 2 movies had so much that was grim and dark, a little comic relief was appropriate (if not entirely accurate to canon).
