Merry and Pippin were both in their "tweens" - not yet reached their
majority of 33 years of age. Merry was generally more thoughtful and
cautious (just) than his cousin - but he and Pippin had already decided
to travel with Frodo to Rivendell, even when he was pretending that he
was only moving to a little cottage near the Old Forrest. (Sam let them
in on the secret) Shame that part of the story got lost - where Sam
first meets Elves in the woods of the Shire, the bath/beer song, etc.
