Highclere Castle, where Downton is filmed, is very real. But it's a fantasy that it's in northern England. It's in Berkshire and isn't that horribly far from us.
I once called them, about ten years ago, to enquire hire rates. I was checking for SCA sites. They told me it was £10K a day, so I thanked them politely and hung up the phone.
Now that Highclere is so famous from Downton, I dread to think how much they charge. Wanna get married at Downton/Highclere? Rob a bank! :)
