One thing I insisted on when I got married the second time was that my
mother NOT do anything because SHE planned my first wedding and
consequently, we had all the "obligation" guests -- old church biddies
that I barely knew, and so forth. I did finally let her do the
flowers because she had once done that professionally.
My mother-in-law made the cake, as she had done that professionally.
My father-in-law provided the beef for the dinner, so we only had to
pay for the rest of the food. A friend officiated, though we did have
a justice of the peace stop by in the morning to do the legal
paperwork (he was vastly surprised that there were no guests and that
we weren't dressed up, though there were obvious signs that a party
was going to be happening). My mom, who was ordained by that time,
kept insisting that she wanted to "pronounce" us (you know, "by the
power vested in me"), which was why we had the JP stop by because
neither of us wanted my mother to declare us legally wed. And then
the JP disappeared before we had a chance to pay him. I still feel
guilty about that.
Anyway. With the ceremony and the reception in our backyard and all
the rest, our wedding was quite inexpensive.
