Don't know about poison ivy, but poison oak grew throughout our backyard in Pennsylvania. My dad always pulled it out with his bare hands -- until he was in his early 80s. It never affected him.
I never have taken the risk -- haven't touched the stuff myself. Of course, here in England I don't need to worry about it. :)
