Nope, I'd never heard of that at all. And I haven't noticed any
abnormal fondness for meerkats over here.  I do have to ask, though --
why are the meerkats in the ads Russian?  Aren't meerkats native to
Africa?

"Simples" (as Alek the meerkat says)... Because that way they can confuse meerkat with market by using an accent. Is the Gecko native to the UK? Our 'Geico Gecko' (insurance ad mascot) has a Brit accent...
