I hope everyone is doing well and that the holidays are treating you well.
I've heard from lots of friends that this past year has been a real ringer.
If you've been squoze through the mangle, I hope the coming year turns out
to be a good one for you. Shoot, I'm feeling magnanimous -- even if this
hasn't been a bad year for you, I hope the next is good.

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER...

Celebrating a decade of lighting the way for over 1000 women and families  

MataHari10-logoLast Saturday, we marked our 10th birthday by honoring all the leadership and community that  brought us here today. Almost 200 community members,  supporters, and families warmed up our MIT venue overlooking the night skyline of Boston. We enjoyed the wide array of global cuisine from Haiti to the Philippines, we were enchanted and mesmerized by the musical stylings of Sistas in Song and Meiver's middle eastern belly dancing, energized by the our Domestic Worker Rights & Empowerment group's role play, overjoyed by the children's cultural parade, and grounded by Grupo Latina de MataHari's Mayan ceremony to usher in the new year.  

As we received reflections from founder Carol Gomez and new Executive Director Monique Nguyen, listened to acceptance speeches from awardees Olga Piox, Lourdes Patel, Asia Graves, Lydia Edwards, and Greater Boston Legal Services it was a powerful reminder of how much strength, leadership and support there is amongst us. Everyone looked festive and fancy, and we made sure to close out the night with a dance party! Photos can be viewed here.

From 2002-2012, we were able to accomplish the following through your support and collaboration:
  • Work with over 1000 women and families from over 100 countries of origin
  • Help over 400 trafficked and exploited people
  • Develop the leadership of 100s of women and girls.
  • Held over 200 educational forums and workshops to bring light to the marginalized issue of gender based violence and exploitation
  • Train over 500 advocates, law enforcement, and health professionals to better identify, protect, and support survivors
  • Chanted and marched 1000 miles for justice and freedom
  • Form and support  over 10 broad based coalitions
  • Help pass and introduce legislative bills in MA: Anti-human trafficking bill (2011) and Domestic Workers' Bill of Rights (coming 2013)

Campaign for Drivers License in Massachusetts - Meeting at BIC on Wed 19th

The next Driver's License meeting will thus be held on Wednesday 19 December at 7pm (NOT Tuesday 18 December as previously announced), at the Brazilian Immigrant Center, 14 Harvard Avenue, 2nd Floor, Allston MA 02134 (near the corner of Harvard Avenue and Cambridge Street).
