This is when I spam the list with crass commercialism.

Kristine Kathryn Rush and Dean Wesley Smith are getting back into the editing game. I know most of you are old enough to remember Pulphouse, the glorious magazine that nearly bankrupted them. Most of you were probably reading The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction when KKR was editing it. It's been a long time since we were able to buy something they put together, and I, for one, have missed it.

It seems that time is pretty much over.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/403649867/fiction-river-an-original-fiction-anthology-series

They're putting together a new bi-monthly mag right now. They've already met their funding goals to start it, and they have two days left of raising money to keep it running for a while. I can't even begin to tell you folks just how excited I am to be able to pay money for this.

They're already funded well enough to get the project off the ground. Right now, it's possible to look at that Kickstarter project as a way to get a discounted subscription. This, my friends, is my idea of *cool*. It is awesome. I am unashamed to giggle with anticipation. YES I WILL FUCKING GIGGLE!

So, yes, I'm spamming you folks with a link that can take your money. Forgive me. I'm just kinda jazzed about this thing..

Additional information for August 18 Coalition minutes

Hello Everyone,

I missed some of you at Saturday's meeting, and hope that everything's going well.

I want to thank Lydia for sending the minutes, but want to make sure that they cover everything that actually was discussed at the meeting. Here are some of those things that are not outlined in the minutes:

1)   About Matahari's doing the meeting chairing and coordination, the idea was that they would do it for six months, and then it would be open to another group who wished to do it, and if no one did, then Matahari could continue for another six months.

2)   On the draft Matahari letter for the worker's case, if the Massachusetts Coalition is mentioned, we should include all the names of the member organizations.  This has been our practice in the past, as with the recent Belmont case.  If the letter is just from Matahari, of course, it doesn't need to use the Coalition name.

3)   About the Domestic Worker Bill of Rights public campaign, there were a few details that did not make it into the minutes.  I have spent a great deal of time thinking about this, and at the meeting I shared a lot of information learned through various meetings and trainings that I described to people who were present.  See the attachments with some of the information that I shared at the meeting.

During the meeting I volunteered to continue to work on the public campaign piece of the movement building, such as continuing to collect information on pressure points, and to learn more about ways in which we can be more effective as we move on – always being transparent and sharing everything back with everyone in the coalition for general discussion and consensus on any decision or strategy issues.  This seemed to be agreeable at the meeting, and because many of you were not there, I want to make sure that you are ok with my continuing to work on the organization of the public campaign piece of the movement.

4)   It's sad to think so, but there was a lot of opposition to the Domestic Worker Bill of Rights in New York and California, and they mount negative publicity about domestic worker rights (see below for more details).  It is important for us to define ourselves to the public through good, positive messaging and a thoughtful media strategy, before opponents can begin to viciously define us in the public's eye. For this it probably makes sense for us to get a consultant to work with us to develop good messaging, even if we have to pay them.

In solidarity,

Natalicia

NATALICIA'S NOTES ABOUT THE LOBBYING & PUBLIC CAMPAIGN August 18, 2012

1.  MECHANICS OF INTRODUCING THE BILL

The DEADLINE is the first Wednesday in December 2012 for filing a bill for the next legislative session.  This is:  DECEMBER 5, 2012

Preparing the bill language:  The GBLS employment law unit has a lot of experience doing it, and other groups such as NELP and National Lawyers Guild might be able to help as well.

Which Representative(s) and which Senator(s) should be the lead legislative sponsor(s) for the Bill of Rights?  They should be passionate, committed sponsors. They can be someone unexpected, not necessarily one of the people who usually sponsor labor bills.

If we can, submit it to both houses at the same time.  In the end, 81 House Representatives need to support it for it to pass.  The magic number in the Senate is 21 supporters.

It will be assigned to the joint Labor and Workforce Development Committee.

Hearing at the committee level:  We need to be ready to go to a hearing.  Have a line-up of witnesses, including workers with good stories, and progressive employers who support the bill. Be creative at the hearing.

We want to keep it alive in the committee (not sent to study, which is the same as killing it).  We want a favorable committee report on it. This means we need to meet with and convince the chairs and with every single person on the committee. There are 17 members, 11 in the House, and 7 in the Senate. Most people concentrate on the House since there are more of them on the committee.

InstaTrack (http://www.instatrac.com) is a service that can help us track the bill once it is in process.  You have to subscribe to this.

2.  LOBBYING FOR THE BILL: THE BIG JOB

The Bill will be assigned to the joint Labor and Workforce Development Committee. Cheryl Coakley Rivera of Springfield is the Chair.  We will need Springfield people, who live and work in her district, to lobby her about the importance of the bill and to get her support.  Dan Wolf from Cape Cod is the Senate co-chair.  He received the "Good Guy" award from the Massachusetts Women's Political Caucus for his outstanding support of women in the workforce. Who do we know who lives and works in his district?

Of the 17 people on the committee, with all of whom we must meet, these two are the most important to get on our side.

The role of the House Speaker (especially) and Senate President is critical.  They move the bills. If they do not support the bills they will probably not get out of committee and will never come up for a vote on the floor of the legislature.  If they are committed, it moves faster.

It is necessary to lobby them, as well as the Ways and Means Committee.  The House Speaker is Robert DeLeo of East Boston/Winthrop.  The Senate President is Therese Murray of Plymouth/Barnstable County (Cape).  Who do we have who lives in their district and perhaps has a relationship with them?

The membership of the committees, and their chairs, may change after the upcoming November 2012 elections.

Every time we lobby someone, be sure to bring a constituent who lives in the district of the legislator we are lobbying.   Be prepared to get to know and work closely with the staff of the legislators.

We need good messaging and talking points. Bring compelling stories.  Bring community people.  Always bring workers with real stories. Remember that justice is on our side.

3. GETTING LABOR UNION SUPPORT

The labor unions give money to legislators, and have influence with them, and their support is crucial to the passage of our bill.  The AFLCIO statewide labor council is especially important since they carry a lot of weight with legislators on labor-related bills like this one.

4. PUBLIC RELATIONS AND MEDIA MESSAGING

It is important to get our own positive media messages out first, before the opposition can define us in the media and the public eye.

In New York and in California, the proponents of the Domestic Worker Bill of Rights were portrayed as selfish and cruel, and taking advantage of elderly and other vulnerable people who would not be able to afford their services, if they got the pay and benefits and rights they wanted. THEY SAID THE QUALITY OF CARE FOR THESE VULNERABLE PEOPLE WOULD SUFFER IF THE BILL OF RIGHTS PASSED.

The main opposition groups against the bills in New York and California were agencies that place nannies, elderly care workers, and cleaners into homes, and disability and elderly right group, including AARP.  Hopefully with the Caring Across the Generations Campaign, where domestic workers are allying with elderly and disability rights groups, this will reduce this kind of tension, and opposition to our Bill of Rights.

Probably these themes, that our Bill promotes all of these, would be important:

Loving

Caring

Home

It might be good to have a media or public relations consultant, if we can find someone to help us.
