Open Letter to Stand

Open Letter to Stand for Children

We represent organizations across Massachusetts, including communities that Stand for Children now claims to represent. When a well-financed group like Stand for Children, backed by out-of-state and corporate money, arrives with a plan to “fix” our schools, but fails to consult with any of us or solicit our input, it raises deep concerns.

At a time when many of our organizations are struggling to provide essential services, or even to remain afloat, Stand spent more than $250,000 to essentially buy its way onto the November ballot—at $3 per signature—and still had enough money left to blanket the state with radio, television and newspaper ads.

We now learn that Stand is backed by corporate foundations connected to Walmart, Bain Capital and JP Morgan Chase, and that your ballot initiative would diminish community voice, strip teachers of their rights, all the while failing to deal with many of the real issues confronting our children.

Had you consulted with any of our organizations and community leaders, we would have told you what our children need: a fair and substantive opportunity to learn in a safe environment. This consists of a well-rounded curriculum that includes art, music, theater programs, vocational and technological training—not just test prep; an end to discipline practices that push our kids into the school to prison pipeline; and better programs, services and supports for our English language learners and special-needs students that respond to their genuine needs. Most of all, our communities need more and better jobs so that our kids believe that school actually leads to something.

Your ballot initiative addresses none of these needs.

We need a real conversation in Massachusetts about the best way to improve our schools, an honest, collaborative exchange that includes parents, students, teachers and the community. What we don’t need are phony sound bite “solutions” backed by big corporate money.

Stand: please respect our communities and withdraw your ballot question today.

Yeah. Discussions about religion (or politics) can get pretty heated
pretty fast. It's a minefield for most people. Double danger because
it's by email where the usual visual clues don't exist. Double again for
an Aspie who can't see other clues. I avoid debating religion where I
can. I've had some pleasant debates with doorstep evangelists of various
flavours. I do mention early in the discussion that I was taught by
Jesuits. I haven't yet met a doorstep evangelist who recognised the
significance of that.

Elsewhere I'm mediating between someone who I suspect is an Aspie (and
an economist, not a good combination) and the rest of the group.
Watching him leap from one bear-trap to the next has a horrible sort of
fascination. It's not going to end well.

Warning: Daleks Ahead

Sometimes I really miss Boulder. This link to the Boulder Daily Camera discusses how Dr. Who fans hacked into a road sign to change it to Warning Daleks Ahead.

And more on Have I Got News for You Re: Top Gear

Will Clarkson be distributing birdseed to the birdies? :) Would he be more like Brian May, who's given over a chunk of his land to Harper Asprey, a wildlife rescue agency for whom a friend of mine volunteers. He's done a lot of good publicity for them, particularly their work with foxes. (He was on the Foxes Live: Wild on the City show on Channel 4 recently, dispelling myths about foxes.)

I'm looking forward to this Friday night's Have I Got News for You. William Shatner is the host. Charlie Brooker and Andy Hamilton are the guest panelists along with stalwarts Ian Hislop and Paul Merton. I don't know how well known Brooker and Hamilton are outside of the UK, but Brooker is blunt, to the point and boldly satirical. And Hamilton is a good comedian -- he's one of the main writers/directors/producers of Outnumbered.

It'll be a nice distraction in the background whilst I'm completing the on-line standardisation for the exam I mark.

Clarkson was also a guest on Sunday's edition of BBC Countryfile. He's
just bought a farm and he's looking for a manager who can run it and
attract more wildlife to it, particularly birds. He likes birds.

Domestic Workers Demand Wages Owed by Belmont Millionaire

PRESS RELEASE
Domestic Workers Demand Wages Owed by Belmont Millionaire

Belmont— Domestic workers and workers' rights advocates will be holding a protest in the center of Belmont on May 22, 2012, calling on John Cranney, CEO of Shaklee Corporation, to pay the workers the back wages they are owed.  These five workers allege that Cranney, a Belmont resident and millionaire, has refused to pay for the house work and home care they provided for him and his wife.

After attempting to talk with Mr. Cranney, the workers ended up filing suit. The court hearing will be May 24, 2012.  All of the workers are standing together to support each others claims of wage theft. A total of five workers are seeking wages. Four are being represented by the Domestic Worker Law and Policy Clinic, and another worker just came forward with the hopes of filing suit.

"We worked really hard, I missed Christmas with my family to work for him and I just want to get paid." N. Cabral

"We have sent three letters to Mr. Cranney, asking for him to pay these workers for their hard work, yet we have received no response. We are shocked at his blatant disregard for U.S. labor laws and for their rights of these women who spent hours working in his home," said Natalicia Tracy, Executive Director of the Brazilian Immigrant Center.

"It is deplorable that a man of such great wealth like Mr. Cranney would refuse to pay his workers." said Russ Davis, Executive Director of Massachusetts Jobs with Justice. "The average amount owed to each worker is about $3,000. Mr. Cranney's house alone has a worth of $3.8 million, so we are confident that he has the resources to pay his workers.

Please join Brazilian Immigrant Center, Jobs with Justice, WILD, Matahari and the Massachusetts Coalition for Domestic Workers as  we

STAND WITH THE WORKERS!!!!!

I've been in England for too long, I think. I was wondering why we'd all be seeing Mal's underwear. :)

That's a great suggestion! Even those little flashlights/torches that can be attached to keychains would be useful in such cases.

when I'll be able to do so. I still mean to, though.

On Thursday, my Mom laughed at a joke in the monthly administrative
meeting at the senior center. She then fell over out of her chair and
never woke again. Though, she was technically alive for another 45
minutes while they worked on her before they called it, she was
effectively dead then. Massive congestive heart failure at 59.

I am her sole heir with no will. She was a life-long hoarder and the
family historian. I will be in my home town in the middle of nowhere
at least half time for a month or more at this point sorting it out,
even with all my immediate family helping.

Since I have the soapbox right now:

* Go tell the people that matter to you that love them, even if you're
not talking or getting along.

* Make a will.

* Talk over what you want to happen when you die with your next of kin
and PUT IT IN WRITING.

* Even if don't have a lot of money, start paying into a pre-paid
funeral account. My mother was permanently disabled and on a limited
income. The only reason that I can get things going two days after her
death is that a friend decided that no one should have to wait to
cremate their mother while the money is raised and cut a check on site
for the full amount.

* What are you waiting for? GO TELL THEM THAT YOU LOVE THEM NOW!

At least I had a pretty good idea of what Mom wanted.

A friend of mine used to use the sig line, "John Carter of Wichita, not
Mars"....

He was lucky enough to be born with the name. His parents probably
didn't think of the combination, being accustomed to "Carter" and
wanting their son named John. Or maybe they thought of it, and weren't
bothered.
