So? Prove me wrong. Others have. I'm confident that there are people on this list right now who've been on the receiving end of much worse from me.

Sibyl, a list like this is a terrible representation of real communication. There can be no smile, or nod, or happy laughter to show joy. Similarly, there can be no groan, glazed eyes or nervous rigidity to tell you when the conversation is going badly. All you can offer are your words. Take care choosing them, be generous with them, and respect the people you talk to -- give them your best or open up with both barrels, a cannon and a baseball bat. That's all that anyone can really ask.

Whatever problems I have with you are the result of the style and content of your posts, and my comments about you reflect only my judgment of you as you appear to be in this particular forum. I couldn't judge your worth in any other context even if I wanted to. This type of forum simply can't provide the knowledge or experience to do that.

Take a little time to think before you post, and let your writing reflect who you are. I have little doubt that you are better than the names I called you (most rabid hamsters are better than the names I called you), and I would be overjoyed to see you show that with your writing.

Of course, if you want to leave, I surely won't try to stop you. I'm far, far too lazy for that.

That also. Cause well, if people on more than one list are calling you
out, perhaps you should check that shoe size again.

Okay, this was the last e-mail I got before I cut off my e-mail
connection (which is my real world, the folders in my Thunderbird that
begin to glow when a new post comes through the filters into them). I
fudged, kept my web membership to maintain some connection, but I could
wait to go to the board until I felt ready to be unexpectedly maligned
and misjudged -- and no, bardi, I'm not going to admit to any guilt:
it's just that I was _called_ a troll, not that I was one, in the sense
of the people who just join groups for the purpose of starting fights.
I _hate_ to be labeled something that I'm not, especially with a whole
flock of mislabels like Mal put on me.

I think I'll leave it as it is. I don't really feel at home on web
boards, the way I can on Listservs, a whole 'nuther feel, and easier to
disconnect from.

Thank you, those who are my friends. I'll be seeing you around the web,
in The Mythic Cafe, for example, while I'm lurking and maybe or maybe
not looking at

have to say...I lurk a lot and agree that getting the tone of a group is very important!!!! Better to say and act less....But don't give up...seems a silly choice to me.

Love you, too! I actually do not mind, at all, being used as an example for this kind of case. I really make an excellent one. Sibyl, when I first arrived at Tamson House, in 1999, I really, really fucked up. In my opinion, I was way more rude and obnoxious than anything you've ever said here. But I took the smack down I got really seriously. I sat back quietly for a few weeks. I learned how to interact with people here on a much more constructive level. I asked for forgiveness. I received it. I fucked up a few other times, but not as badly. Asked foregivness. Received it. And here I still am, going on thirteen years later, still talking to these very forgiving and possibly tragically forgetful folks. ;-) If i did it, you totally can, too.

Eons ago, it was common practice to lurk for a few months for just that
reason. I think with a group like this, it's especially important. It's been
around for over 15 years, and the group dynamics, history, jokes, and such all
play into an orderly, swirling chaos. Jumping right in without list context
can only lead to the mountains of madness.

Me, too. I'm very grateful to the House for helping me learn appropriate etiquette for online interaction, as well as what and how to post in a discussion group. Developing a thicker skin to survive the occassional flammable exchange is a handy skill I picked up here, too. Maybe I'm an idealist or optimist, but I'd like to think you (and all the rest of us THers for that matter) can learn (or continue to learn) from experiences in the House as well.

Before you leave entirely, I'd suggest you try just lurking. It might lead to a clearer understanding of the dynamics of the group, as well as each member's tone or "voice" - which could help minimize misunderstandings. My two cents, that's all.

Really? I'm disappointed. I'm going to go out on a limb here, Sibyl, and say that I think you've been doing better. I still don't understand what was up with you with that one whole conversation, but I hold a minority opinion that you weren't actually trying to be a jerk. I hope you don't leave. I actually like you. You've been here, what, a year? And the only time you've bugged me personally was with that one conversation where everyone came down on you. Your mileage may vary with others, but I don't think you should leave.

Matt

I agree with Matt. I cannot speak for the others, but I did not want you to stay I would simply ignore you.

Sorry. Again. It's just that I've been called a troll in two separate
places recently, one of them here, and this was posted, I believe, in
"The Mythic Cafe" on FaceBook (I think it was there, wouldn't swear to
it in court.) "The Coming of the Troll" is a title of 1:39 of music, by
Alexis Korner, which I found reasonably pleasing, though not necessarily
"pretty". I believe that it's part of a fantasy-themed show, or maybe a
suite of pieces, though not certain of that. I just thought it funny to
post to both Lists. (On the other one, if I disagree with the List
founder on any point at all, he can't agree to disagree, but calls me a
troll.) Here, you were present for the occasion. It's rock, and I
can't understand all the words. I don't think any of them are porn, but
I might be wrong.

I do know what you mean: it takes me so very long to download a couple
of minutes of video, that I'd usually rather not start. I didn't know
that not including an explanation was a break with a Tradition, but it
does annoy me when someone else does it: I want to know whether it's
worth the download.

Hey Sibyl, we have a bit of a tradition in Tamson House. Usually, if we post links, we do so with at least a bit of text to say why we're posting the link. It's nice to let people know why we liked whatever it is we're linking to or why we think others on the list might like it. I always appreciate knowing what I'm getting myself into before clicking on a link. Some links, even if they're technically "safe for work," might be best saved to watch in certain times or places or without certain company in the room. Posting with no context gives us no idea why we ought to click on something. Care to fill us in on this one?

I think it was around 2010 when you had to go to this website and apply for the visa waiver programme if you're a citizen of one of the applicable countries, such as the UK.
http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/travel/id_visa/esta/
As it says there... "International visitors to the U.S. from Visa Waiver Program countries are now required to apply for travel authorization online."

So you have to tell the US you're coming now. Before, you just bought tickets and boarded the plane.

Here's the fact sheet.
http://www.cbp.gov/linkhandler/cgov/travel/id_visa/esta/esta_2010_fact_sheets/fact_sheet_esta.ctt/fact_sheet_esta.pdf

If you they give you travel authorisation, it's good for two years. After that, you have to re-apply. If they turn you down, you have to apply for an actual visa. They say you should apply as far in advance as possible. There is a $4 processing fee and a $14 authorisation fee.
Back to Jenny U:

Have the requirements got stricter recently, Ellen? I took around 20 sixth formers to New York a few ears ago (2008?) and I don't remember online forms. I do remember the immigration form though....Imagine the scene if you will....on the plane with 20 tired and excited 17-18 year olds....

'Right....the answers to these questions are no, no, yes, no and no respectively....Gavin, this means you!'

'Miss, what's moral turpitude?'

'Just say no. Gavin, have you just said that you have entered the US with the intention of assasinating the president? (I wonder how many thay catch like that?)'

'Giggle'

'Here's a new form, its the last one, please don't mess it...oh.'

and so on.

Right now, a ball of fluff sounds really good. At the moment, I am a
neurotic mess who has nearly split from her husband of nearly ten
years multiple times over the last couple of weeks. It's still too
close to call at this point.

Also, I am extremely insomniac right now. As I posted to Facebook:

exaggerating nearly as much as you assume I am. Wheeeeeeee!"

I worked with a woman from South Africa a few years ago. She needed a special visa to go practically anywhere as she only had a South African passport. Jax -- what are the countries you don't need a visa for? I think she said the Netherlands and someplace else, but I don't remember.

Hm. I dunno. I've been to the Netherlands, but it was part of a Europe tour, so I got a schengen visa which gives you access to all the members of the EU. I think you can get into some of the African countries neighbouring us (like Swaziland) without a visa, but I'm not even sure about that. I pretty much assume I'm going to need one whenever I travel unless I'm going back to SA!

On the plus side, I've done it enough now that I'm pretty adept at navigating the bureacracies. It's just time consuming and expensive. The fact that I have to get this visa, and that I have to go to Auckland to do so is adding like NZ$600 to the cost of my trip.
The appointments are first thing in the morning too. Like, the latest is 9am. And there are no early flights from Dunedin, so I have to spend a night there. Thank goodness I have friends in Auckland. Else I'd be adding a hotel to that too!

The US makes it difficult if you're not American to visit there. Even if you have a passport from one of the visa waiver countries, the requirements are a pain nowadays. And the stupid form they have to fill out. Do you intend to overthrow by force the government of the United States? Yes/No.

Yeah, the form is kind of hilarious. Do you intend to assassinate the president? Do you intend to engage in terrorist activity?

But Ian would have to fill out an on-line form in advance stating his intention to travel to the US -- or he's not allowed in the country.

Of course, he has to be fingerprinted and photographed as well. I don't.

I already got fingerprinted last time, so I don't have to repeat it.

It's funny, I found the visa waiver form a BREEZE. But that's probably because I've been dealing with this sort of crap my whole travelling life. ;)

We have a friend who couldn't use the visa waiver programme because he has a drink driving conviction from years and years ago. He doesn't even drive any longer nor does he drink alcohol, but due to that conviction, the US considers him a felon. To visit the US, he'd have to apply for a special visa. He and his wife gave up on their planned US holiday and went elsewhere instead.

I phoned them to check I could fill it in for C. It was a funny conversation.

"Hi, I have a year old child who is a NZ citizen. I'm South African. Can I put him through the visa waiver program?"
"Hang on let me check." *long pause* "Yes he does need a visa, even though he's a baby."
"No, wait, listen to my question." *repeats question*
"Oh. Oh, yes, I think so."
"Even though there's that clause about how you have to understand what you're saying and so on? He's a year old. He doesn't understand. I am filling it in for him. There is nothing on the form that allows for that. That's okay right?"
"Yes. Yes, I think so."
"Can you be sure please?"
"Wait let me check." *long pause* "Yes, that's okay."
"Great, thanks."

So your current passport is from South Africa? Or UAE?

South African. I haven't been in NZ long enough to get citizenship yet. But once I can, I probably will, just because travelling on a NZ passport is sooo much easier than travelling on a SA one.

 And they
require an interview?  Interesting.

Yup. They're pretty much the only ones who do. I've travelled all over the place, as you know, and the US is far and away the most awful one for visas and so forth.

Kiwis can more or less just go though. You have to fill in an online waiver form, but I did it for Christopher (cos, being born here, he has a NZ passport) and it took like 20 mins. Mine though? MISSION.

My experience is pretty much
limited to travelling from the US to places like France, Mexico,
Dominican Republic, and Jamaica -- no interviews required for any of
those, just a form to fill out and a stamp in the customs/immigration
line when you get off the plane.

There are a lot of places like that, but when you're on a South African passport most places want a visa. I think the only place I've been where I could just walk in was Bahrain. And I think even there, I had to buy a visa at the airport.

But the US is the worst. By a mile!

We are being overcome by lazarus lizards I am told. I know I have a lounge of them living in the rocks out back. They like to sun on my back deck because the rotweiler next door cannot bother them. He really, really wants to play with them. They do not appear interested.

Wish I could say I'm surprised, but I'm not. Of *course* the US
doesn't want no furriners cluttering up our perfect country. At least
without making sure they know damn well what an honour is being

So your current passport is from South Africa? Or UAE? And they
require an interview? Interesting. My experience is pretty much
limited to travelling from the US to places like France, Mexico,
Dominican Republic, and Jamaica -- no interviews required for any of
those, just a form to fill out and a stamp in the customs/immigration
line when you get off the plane.

Okay, I have to know. Is the US as meerkat crazy at Britain is? Do you have compare the market/meerkat ads also?

If you don't, some advertising genius came up with a new way to promote 'Compare the Market' a website where you can compare insurance companies, credit cards etc. The idea is that people are mixing it up with another website, 'Compare the Meerkat', and the meerkats are upset.

Their main representative, Aleksandr, even has published a biography. And there really is a Compare the Meerkat website now.

I am still planning to show up, but I can't book anything until I get a visa. My visa interview (for which I have to go all the way to Auckland) is on the 23rd April, so I'll hopefully be booking things soon after that.

Am hoping this is the last time I'll have to get a visa to visit the States. This one is a ten year visa, and by the time it expires I will hopefully have a New Zealand passport, which doesn't need a visa.

But, yes, assuming your government lets me in, I'll be there. :)

I am so sorry, Mac. If it makes you feel better I am constantly in
awe of your strength -- everything you've been through and everything

I know the feeling! I haven't been sleeping well myself lately -- I
have this low-grade cold that doesn't seem to want to go away and is
just annoying enough to keep me up, not to mention annoying constant
hamster-braining. I've been chugging Mountain Dew like there's no
tomorrow.

> Right now, a ball of fluff sounds really good.

Okey dokey then! She's 8wks now, pure black, frisky and troublesome
and utterly adorable. We've named her Meira (MEER-uh). We also call
her Meer-kat or Meer-kitten. We got her from the Animal Rescue League
here in Boston where she'd apparently been surrendered by an owner who
had 'too many cats'. Reading between the lines I think it was someone
who hadn't bothered to spay their own cat and thus ended up with a
surprise litter of kittens. Either way, she's very outgoing and
well-adjusted which is new for me. In the past most of the cats I've
had have been ferals, so I'm used to kittens that cower in the corner
and have to be coaxed slowly over a period of months to allow you to
pet them. Meira is fearless, cuddlesome, purrs like a deisel engine,
loves to pounce on toes and sit on shoulders and generally makes an
adorable nuisance of herself.

Lately she's taken to following Robin (our 8-year-old cat) around
about a foot behind and then looking all nonchalant when he glances
back. There've been a few hissing matches and one clawless swat
upside the head when she pounced on his tail but mostly he seems to be
taking the new addition in stride. I don't think he's quite sure what
to make of her yet.

We do have to work on her rambunctiousness though -- she has to be
locked up in the study at night because she likes to play tug-of-war
with hair and chase her tail on pillows while we're trying to sleep.
We could close the bedroom door but Robin sleeps at the end of the bed
and we don't want to take away his spot just cause she's a bit rowdy.
Hopefully she'll settle a bit as she gets older.

A few pictures are here:

Lol... unless she's using homeopathy and then her ratio is a little off (1 gtt caffeine in diluted successively in 5 swimming pools worth of water agitated vigorously between dilutions and then one drop from the last swimming pool should have her sleeping like a baby (tongue firmly planted in cheek)

CJ, my partner, has been called for jury duty nearly every  year of our 20+, and always sends a declination based on her mental health disability, which will never change. I have been called once. I don't even know what they base their call on.

Work, both real estate and sipping vinegars, is picking up - which is good, because I'm two months behind on mortgage. I was supposed to be getting a close tomorrow, in fact, but the house my buyers were (maybe are) getting caught on fire, so that's a bust for now.

I started watching Supernatural because current tv is all reruns and/or boring or both.

I am still plotting things to do for our get-together in August if any but three people and me show up. :D

You are not the first person to suggest this. However, I've actually
been avoiding caffeine the last month, as I got into a horrible
stress/insomnia/coffee cycle that was driving me mad (somewhat
literally). Unfortunately, I have no choice today, I have to be on
until at least 9 p.m. Therefore, the caffeine was necessary.

Okay, no more caffeine for you! Would you like to join me in the caffeine-free club? I went off of it in November 1984 and haven't looked back. I'm hyper enough as it is; Ian has never seen me on caffeine and fears what might happen!

Please, do tell. :)

I've been busy. It's the last week of term and the usual chaos is active. I'm trying to get in late coursework from students. We're worried about numbers, so we can't just remove students from the exam lists at this point if they haven't turned in the coursework. (Some deadlines were ages ago.) But I really need it now as it must be marked over the two-week holiday. Somehow, we need to moderate it during the first two weeks we're back, starting on 16 April, but it's going to be tight. Nobody wants to cancel classes for moderation meetings, not with first year A level exams starting on 16 May. And our internal inspections will be either the first or second week back; we've not been told which yet. Some of us may be seen in the first week and others in the second. It would be nice to know which week I'll be seen to plan when to give mock exams. (For some reason, the observers don't want to see students sitting a mock! Silly people.)

Oh, oh, and yesterday I came home to a jury summons. What is it with me? I was called for jury duty in Boulder just this past November! I got out of that one as I now live in England. But I've done jury duty in Colorado several times before I moved. Ian's never been summoned here in England.

The bad thing is it's two weeks starting Monday, 21 May -- my final two weeks with my second year students before their exams. Not a good time to miss. *sigh* I'm sending in the deferral request tomorrow. But even that's tricky. Friends from the US are visiting in July after I'm done teaching. I've already deferred sinus surgery until August. It's been tricky putting down what weeks I could do it. There are only two weeks during my five-week holiday that I can do two weeks in a row. Work is having us return earlier than usual in August to help answer phones when GCSE students are ringing in with their results (rather than hire temps), so I've put down those two weeks -- the phone answering time and planning/meeting time. Etc.

Oh, and work still thinks that Ofsted might appear next term. *sigh* Waiting for Godot, waiting for Ofsted.

Right now, a ball of fluff sounds really good. At the moment, I am a
neurotic mess who has nearly split from her husband of nearly ten
years multiple times over the last couple of weeks. It's still too

Detention Watch Network deplores anti-immigrant hearing

DETENTION WATCH NETWORK DEPLORES

LATEST ANTI-IMMIGRANT HEARING IN CONGRESS

Washington, D.C. – While nearly 400,000 immigrants are incarcerated each year in an expanding archipelago of punitive and life-threatening detention centers, Congress continues to deny the moral and human rights crisis caused by mass detention. Wednesday afternoon Congressman Lamar Smith (R-TX) will convene a hearing of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Immigration Policy and Enforcement to continue his callous assault on immigrants and immigrant communities. The pretext for the hearing is the recent announcement by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that it will implement a revised version of its internal guidelines on the treatment of immigrants detained in ICE facilities. Detention Watch Network (DWN) condemns this latest round of anti-immigrant showboating by the Republicans and calls upon Congress to repeal mandatory detention, which is the root cause of mass immigrant incarceration.

“ICE’s new guidelines are intended to help address well-documented civil and human rights abuses that continue to occur daily in immigration detention, abuses that Smith apparently finds laughable,” said Andrea Black, Executive Director of DWN. “The very title of Wednesday’s hearing, ‘Holiday on ICE,’ mocks the seriousness of the suffering that immigrants in detention experience and mischaracterizes ICE’s new guidelines as mandating cushy resort-like conditions for those in detention.”

Far from being “hospitality guidelines,” as Congressmen Smith has called them, the 2011 Performance Based National Detention Standards (PBNDS) fall short of providing the necessary protection for immigrants held by ICE. In 2009, after a scathing government report outlined the inhumane conditions and rampant fiscal waste in detention, the Obama Administration promised to address these problems in the only way possible: by moving away from locking up immigrants and towards new models of custody and supervision that reflect the “civil” nature of immigration proceedings. So far that has not happened. If anything, ICE’s latest standards represent the abandonment of that goal. In the 2011 PBNDS, like the 2000 and 2008 versions, ICE continues to rely on penal standards rather than re-envision a truly civil system. As a result, immigrants will continue to be held behind bars, often hundreds of miles from their families, with minimal if any access to legal services, vulnerable to the same substandard medical care and abuses that have prevailed in detention to date. Most important, the PBNDS are not enforceable or even legally binding, and there is no independent oversight of facilities to ensure compliance.

But Congressman Smith and the Republicans have chosen to grandstand and lambast the new guidelines as coddling immigrants and increasing detention costs, rather than looking for real solutions to address the detention crisis head-on.

“If Lamar Smith is concerned about taxpayers footing the bill for detention, he should consider dedicating his energies to the repeal of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act (IIRIRA), the legislation he helped pass 16 years ago, which has been almost single-handedly responsible for the tripling of the number of people in detention,” said Black. “As a result of IIRIRA’s draconian mandatory detention provisions, the government needlessly incarcerates thousands of immigrants every year to the tune of $122 per person per day.”

Detention Watch Network calls on Congress to pass legislation to reduce the unnecessary, inhumane, and wasteful detention of immigrants. Until Congress acts, the Obama Administration must renew its commitment to urgent reform of the detention system by closing the most egregious detention facilities, by aggressively working with non-governmental organizations to promote community-based supervision programs for those in proceedings, and by pushing for legal regulation and third party oversight of the remaining detention centers.
